Medtronic launches CareLink in Europe

Interventional technology firm Medtronic has received CE Mark approval for its CareLink Network with Conexus Wireless Telemetry, and the company plans to debut the device in the European Union.

CareLink can be programmed to automatically transmit patient and device data from an implanted heart device directly to physicians, allowing them to monitor and manage patients with heart failure or arrhythmias. Data transmission is accomplished via a global standard Medical Implant Communications Service (MICS) radiofrequency band.

CareLink is compatible with Medtronic's Concerto cardiac resynchronization therapy-defibrillators (CRT-D), as well as the company's Virtuoso implantable cardioverter-defibrillators (ICDs). CareLink also can monitor fluid buildup in the thoracic cavity with a feature called OptiVol fluid status monitoring.
