SRI gets grants for x-ray tube R&D

R&D institute SRI International has received two grants totaling $946,000 from the U.S. National Cancer Institute (NCI) to develop a prototype x-ray system based on a new source tube design.

The new design is intended to improve 3D imaging with x-ray, which will make it easier to monitor tumor growth and assess the body's response to chemotherapy treatment, the Menlo Park, CA-based company said. As part of this project, SRI researchers will develop a real-time x-ray system that will be able to acquire dynamic x-ray images.

The system will be based on a new type of x-ray source tube that could allow for a cheaper and smaller x-ray system. In addition, the new design would allow for increased speed, improved image quality, and more flexible angular coverage, SRI said.

SRI's medical product development projects include biosensors, ultrasonic scanners, blood pressure instruments, blood and tissue sampling devices, insulin delivery systems, digital x-ray systems, MRI technology, and surgical robots.
