Bracco to acquire injector firm Acist

Italian contrast media developer Bracco plans to expand its product line by acquiring contrast injector firm Acist Medical Systems of Eden Prairie, MN. The deal would give Bracco control of a company with a global installed base of more than 500 contrast injector systems, and a 50% share of the cardiology contrast injection market. Bracco currently owns 12% of Acist.

Acist was founded in 1991 and develops contrast injectors for diagnostic and interventional radiology, cardiology, and vascular surgery applications. The company posted sales of $9 million in 2000, and expects revenues of about $20 million this year. The acquisition is pending the approval of U.S. regulatory authorities.

If the purchase is approved, Bracco will become the third contrast manufacturer to own a contrast injection firm. Germany's Schering owns Medrad of Indianola, PA, while Mallinckrodt of St. Louis owns Liebel-Flarsheim, also of St. Louis.
