January 3, 2013 -- India is building its first facility to produce medical isotopes, according to a report in the Hindustan Times.

The article noted that construction is set to start soon in Kolkata and the facility will be commissioned by 2014.

Currently, India imports medical isotopes from the U.K., Israel, and South Africa.

The Variable Energy Cyclotron Centre is building the project in partnership with the Board of Radiation and Isotope Technology and India's Department of Atomic Energy.
