The CPT Editorial Panel of the American Medical Association (AMA) approved two new Category III CPT codes for AI-assisted cardiac risk analysis in its February meeting.
The newly approved CPT codes (X409T and add-on code X434T) for reporting noninvasive assessment of cardiac risk derived from augmentative software analysis will be published on the AMA website by July 2025 and will be effective on January 1, 2026.
In a statement, Stamford, CT-based company Caristo Diagnostics noted that the approval of the two new CPT codes is a critical milestone for its CaRi-Heart AI-powered software for detecting coronary inflammation in routine coronary CT angiography (CCTA) scans.
CaRi-Heart uses AI to analyze perivascular fat captured in CCTA scans to reveal coronary inflammation, a predictor of heart attack.
The codes will enable U.S. clinical adoption and payer reimbursement for CaRi-Heart once U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) clearance is obtained, Caristo said. CaRi-Heart is currently available for research use only in the U.S.
