If a CT scan of a patient with obtunded blunt trauma is normal, is a follow-up MRI scan still needed to ensure the person doesn't have cervical spine trauma? Probably not, according to new research published in JAMA Surgery.

Researchers have created 3D-printed models of groin vasculature with texture resembling real tissue for use in training students on ultrasound-guided interventional procedures. CT may have helped researchers uncover why there's been an explosion of home runs in Major League Baseball (MLB). A group from California and Ohio scanned baseballs and found that their density has dipped in recent years -- supporting suspicions that "juiced balls" are behind the power surge.

Head CT scan finds large air pocket displacing brain
Clinicians in Northern Ireland reported that CT scans of a patient revealed a sizable black spot in the frontal lobe of the brain. This hypodense mark turned out to be a pocket of air that was compressing brain tissue as it seeped into the skull, according to a paper in BMJ Case Reports.
