New CT diagnostic reference levels factor in image quality
CT diagnostic reference levels (DRLs) are primarily intended to regulate radiation dose. But researchers from Duke University are now proposing that image noise be factored into DRLs to further optimize the quality of CT scans, in an article published in the October issue of the American Journal of Roentgenology.

MRI, blood test uncover signs of mild TBI in athletes
The combination of MRI and blood biomarker analysis revealed damage to the blood-brain barrier of high-contact sports athletes in a new study published online in the Journal of Neurotrauma. Together, the tests may be able to detect mild traumatic brain injuries (TBIs) that often go undiagnosed using standard methods.

Radiologist leadership cuts CT lung screening radiation
Many U.S. institutions have been exceeding radiation dose recommendations for CT lung cancer screening exams, according to a study published online September 23 in JAMA Internal Medicine. A possible solution may be to have a lead radiologist establish CT protocols at each screening facility.

Cinematic rendering offers clinical utility in MSK CT
What is the clinical utility of cinematic rendering in musculoskeletal (MSK) CT? It enhances the visualization of soft-tissue injuries and fractures -- in turn improving trauma evaluation and preoperative planning, Dr. Savvas Nicolaou said in a presentation at the recent International Society for Computed Tomography meeting in San Diego.

ISCT: Will AI for CT be radiology's killer app?
SAN DIEGO - While artificial intelligence (AI) has been generating buzz in radiology, a "killer app" for AI in medical imaging has yet to emerge. Dr. Eliot Siegel believes that killer app could be the use of AI for processing CT data, according to a talk at the 2019 International Society for Computed Tomography (ISCT) meeting.

ISCT: Radiologists glean insight from patient reviews
SAN DIEGO - Whether for a conventional CT scan or a more intricate imaging exam, radiology reports can often be challenging for patients to understand. Dr. Arun Krishnaraj shared lessons learned from soliciting feedback for medical imaging reports in a talk at the 2019 International Society for Computed Tomography (ISCT) symposium.

Images of a 39-year-old who underwent screening mammography. Right craniocaudal (left) and mediolateral oblique (middle) views from preoperative mammography show suspicious grouped fine pleomorphic calcifications (arrows). After biopsy showed ductal carcinoma of situ (DCIS), patient underwent breast-conserving surgery, yielding final diagnosis of ductal carcinoma in situ (intermediate grade, hormone receptor positive). (Right) Screenshot of an output of a commercial AI tool applied to preoperative mammography. AI detected right breast lesion with score of 95% on both views (concentric colored circles). Present study’s reviewing radiologist deemed AI marking to correspond with site of DCIS.

Could AI scoring help with managing DCIS?
Axial contrast-enhanced CT scan in a 28-year-old premenopausal woman shows an incidentally detected solid-appearing left ovarian lesion (solid arrow) anterior to the uterus (U), associated with trace ascites in the right adnexa and cul de sac (dashed arrows). At pathologic analysis, this was shown to be ovarian dysgerminoma. Two readers misdiagnosed this lesion, one as a leiomyoma and one as an ovarian fibroma.
