New service tracks incidental lung nodules on CT scans
One of the thorniest problems in medical imaging is reporting and tracking incidental findings. Not following up on a finding -- say, a suspicious lung nodule on a CT scan -- can have disastrous consequences for patients and practices alike. A new service being launched this week hopes to make the task easier.

Animal study shows PET/CT can detect brain damage from TMT poisoning

Micro-PET/CT images of rats. (a) At 24 hours in the control group, F-18 FDG uptake in rats brain tissue was normal, and the PET/CT images were red and white; (b) At 7 days in the control group, F-18 FDG uptake in rats brain tissue were normal, and the PET/CT images were red and white; (c) At 24 hours after TMT exposure, F-18 FDG uptake in rats brain tissue were in a low state, and the PET/CT images were orange and yellow. (d) 7 days after TMT exposure, F-18 FDG uptake in rats brain tissue further decreased, and the PET/CT images appeared yellow and light yellow. There was no significant difference in the uptake of muscle tissue between the model group and the control group, and the PET/CT image was blue. Ultrasound ablation is effective for treating hyperparathyroidism
By Amerigo Allegretto
Ultrasound-guided thermal ablation techniques are safe and effective in treating patients with secondary hyperparathyroidism.
January 7, 2025
Ultrasound images depict a 63-year-old man who underwent radiofrequency ablation (RFA) for the treatment of secondary hyperparathyroidism. (A–D) 2D images show four hyperplastic parathyroid glands on the right and left sides (marked with crosshairs). The numbers near the crosshairs represent the number of measured trails. (E) Ultrasound-guided infusion of isolation fluid (arrowheads) around the hyperplastic parathyroid gland to protect vital organs such as the trachea (Tr), carotid arteries (CA), and recurrent laryngeal nerve pathway area (arrow). F) Ultrasound-guided RFA of the hyperplastic parathyroid gland. (G) Immediate postoperative contrast-enhanced ultrasound shows no contrast enhancement in the ablation area. The ablation procedures for the other three parathyroid glands were the same as those described above. Image courtesy of the RSNA,
