Biophan to debut MRI-safe defibrillator lead

Biophan Technologies of West Henrietta, NY, will show a functional design concept of its MRI-safe defibrillator lead at the upcoming North American Society of Pacing and Electrophysiology Conference in San Diego. The device, developed by Wilson Greatbatch, chairman of Biophan’s scientific advisory board, can deliver an 800 volt/40 joule charge to a patient whose heart is determined to be in fibrillation.

The product employs a spark gap device as switch. The switch is open until the defibrillator circuitry detects heart fibrillation, at which time the switch passes a charge to the defibrillator. This design allows the defibrillator lead to be electrically isolated from the device circuitry and eliminates the antenna effect of the lead.
