Predictive index improves criteria for postmastectomy radiation selection

Taiwanese and U.S. radiation oncologists have developed what they call a "more sophisticated prediction model" for local regional recurrence (LRR) after mastectomy. The goal of this new system is to offer a better definition of high risk for LRR, and help determine if certain breast cancer patients would benefit more from postmastectomy radiotherapy (PMRT).

Hologic continues to move aggressively to expand its presence in women's healthcare with the signing of a strategic agreement to acquire computer-aided detection (CAD) firm R2 Technology in a $220 million stock swap. The deal comes on the heels of Hologic's announcement last week to purchase interventional technology developer Suros Surgical Systems for $240 million.

CTA equivalent to angiography for detecting brain aneurysms

SAN FRANCISCO - One of the largest studies to date has also produced some of the highest sensitivities for the detection of ischemic stroke with CT angiography. In the study from the New Jersey Medical School, multidetector CT angiography (MDCTA) was all but equivalent to invasive catheter angiography for the detection of cerebral aneurysms in patients with subarachnoid hemorrhage.
