Group uses electron beam CT for functional CT of kidneys

Many recent advances in CT have focused on creating high-resolution anatomical images from thin-section data. Functional research has largely been relegated to the sidelines. But a new experiment is promising in its use of functional CT to fill a real clinical need. Researchers measured the kidney's glomerular filtration rate using electron beam CT (EBCT) in an animal model.

External anal sphincter defect findings nearly equivalent on MR, US

Endoanal MRI and endoanal ultrasound demonstrate nearly equal capabilities for depicting external anal sphincter (EAS) defects in patients with fecal incontinence. A four-year, multicenter study from the Netherlands has found that both modalities are sensitive tools for preoperative assessment and both techniques can be used to depict surgically repairable anterior EAS defects.

First, researchers from the University of Chicago share their preliminary experience with an automated whole-breast ultrasound device (WhoBUS). In the second study, researchers from Korea and the U.S. compare tissue harmonic imaging (THI) to conventional sonography in characterizing solid breast masses.
