New progress in multiple myeloma treatment; MDCT has edge in detection

Multiple myeloma is slowly giving way to new drugs that are extending and improving the quality of patients' lives. Better treatment options make accurate evaluation all the more important for patient management. And according to a new study, multidetector-row CT (MDCT) detects multiple myelomas slightly better than MRI, and significantly better than PET. Neither MRI nor MDCT can do the job alone, however.

MRgFUS an option for many women seeking less invasive fibroid treatment

Nearly a quarter of U.S. women suffer from clinically symptomatic uterine fibroids. While treatment options have moved beyond hysterectomy, researchers from New York City asked how many of these women are eligible for a less invasive treatment, such as MR-guided focused ultrasound (MRgFUS). A fair number, according to the group, but refining MRgFUS will open it up to a broader patient population.

SAN FRANCISCO - Studies suggest that virtual colonoscopy without cathartic bowel preparation is feasible and sufficiently accurate. More patients might be willing to get screened. But if prepless VC makes patients' lives easier, it complicates matters for radiologists. Dr. Michael Zalis from Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston discussed several issues that impact the emergence of a kinder, gentler screening exam at the International Symposium on Multidetector-Row CT.
