BOSTON - To those in attendance at the opening of the International Symposium on Virtual Colonoscopy on Monday, the outlook for virtual colonoscopy appeared bright. In the run up to this year's meeting, two major studies released in as many weeks had judged the virtual exam equivalent to optical colonoscopy in important measures of efficacy, lending more support for including virtual colonoscopy as a colorectal cancer screening option.

Report: Nuclear medicine patient visits drop in 2006

The total number of patient visits for nuclear medicine procedures declined in 2006, but shows a rebound in 2007, based on results for the first half of this year. The study by IMV Medical Information Division of Des Plaines, IL, estimates there were 15.2 million patient visits in the U.S. in 2006, compared with 17.2 million in 2005, a decline of 12% among 7,320 hospital and nonhospital sites.

A pair of new studies examines cardiac MRI's ability to predict adverse outcomes in patients with evidence of a previous myocardial infarction (MI). Researchers from Sweden studied whether MI scars represented early damage from atherosclerosis, while a team from Germany and California examined whether infarct size could be used to predict left ventricular modeling.

NAS/IOM report sees hope and despair for nuclear medicine

Nuclear medicine is at a crossroads in the U.S., according to a new report by the National Academy of Sciences (NAS) and the Institute of Medicine (IOM). The result of a 13-month study by a multidisciplinary team of experts, the report conveys optimism for future innovations and applications in nuclear medicine, but also reaches some sobering conclusions unless changes occur with research funding, radionuclide availability and cost, federal agency management, and the shortage of trained specialists and experts.
