New CR technology boosts resolution, bags R&D award
By
Brian Casey
U.S. researchers have developed a new type of computed radiography (CR) technology that they believe could yield much higher resolution than existing CR systems. One prominent scientific magazine thought enough of their research to name it one of the top 100 scientific innovations for 2007.

ACR's withdrawal from NAPBC draws mixed response
By
Kate Madden Yee
Earlier this month, the American College of Radiology (ACR) and the Society of Breast Imaging (SBI) withdrew from the National Accreditation Program for Breast Centers (NAPBC). Experimental US tomography runs circles around dense breast tissue
By
Kathlyn Stone
Using water as a conductor between a ring-shaped transducer and breast tissue, a Michigan-based group is experimenting with ultrasound tomography for breast cancer screening. Benefits of this technique include the ability to scan dense breasts and, of course, a lack of radiation, according to the researchers who presented their work at the 2007 American Association of Physicists in Medicine meeting in Minneapolis.

Digital technology makes headway for breast cancer screening
By
Shalmali Pal
Using computed radiography (CR) and full-field digital mammography (FFDM) systems for breast cancer screening cut the radiation dose in half while maintaining a respectable detection rate, according to German breast cancer specialists, who evaluated the first year of their national digital screening program. And researchers from Norway have published follow-up results from the Oslo II study, which compared film-screen mammography (FSM) to FFDM with soft-copy reading in nearly 24,000 women.

Fused MRI and PET improve specificity of breast MRI
By
Wayne Forrest
Researchers at New York University's School of Medicine have found that the combination of functional information from F-18 FDG-PET and anatomic localization from MR imaging can provide a valuable diagnostic method for the detection of primary and recurrent breast cancer. The study noted that fused PET and MRI images substantially increased the specificity of MRI, but, at the same time, decreased MRI's sensitivity in the group of patients analyzed.
