CADx gets approvable letter for Second Look system

CHICAGO - The mammography market could soon see a new competitor in the computer-aided detection (CAD) niche. Canadian developer CADx Medical Systems this week received an approvable letter from the FDA for its Second Look CAD system. Once final premarket approval (PMA) is received, CADx will join R2 Technology as one of two companies able to market a CAD system in the U.S.

New ultrasonic approach focuses on breast imaging

CHICAGO - A new company debuting at this week's RSNA meeting is taking ultrasound into a new direction by applying cross-sectional imaging techniques to the modality. Advanced Diagnostics (ADI) hopes to get the best of both worlds with Avera, a scanner that has the real-time dynamic imaging capabilities of ultrasound and the spatial and contrast resolution of x-ray.

CHICAGO - Norwegian radiologists found that full-field digital mammography with soft-copy reading is comparable to screen-film while also affording a higher patient throughput. In a presentation at the RSNA meeting on Monday, Dr. Per Skaane discussed his group’s successful results with FFDM, in comparison to screen-film, in a population-based breast cancer screening program at Ulleval University Hospital in Oslo.

Hologic and Siemens to form FFDM alliance

CHICAGO - Imaging vendors Hologic and Siemens Medical Solutions have agreed to form an alliance covering the development of full-field digital mammography (FFDM) systems. Under the terms of the proposed deal, Hologic of Bedford, MA, will supply its amorphous selenium flat-panel detectors to Siemens for incorporation into the German vendor’s mammography systems.

Patients with known breast malignancy benefit from MRI

CHICAGO - Dedicated breast MRI has proven its worth for further evaluation of patients with known malignancies, according to a presentation Sunday at the 2001 RSNA meeting. Dr. Lara Hardesty from Magee Women’s Hospital, University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine said her group found MRI was useful for assessing the extent of disease and residual disease, as well as pinpointing unknown primary cancer.

Mirada Solutions joins CAD software fray

At this week’s RSNA meeting, Mirada Solutions of Oxford, U.K., is debuting a new computer-aided diagnosis (CAD) workstation that it believes takes CAD to a new level. The workstation is based on the company’s proprietary standard mammogram form (SMF) software, which Mirada believes can do a better job at differentiating between malignant and benign tissue than current systems on the market.
