Whole-body PET better for palpable breast cancer

Whole-body FDG-PET has high sensitivity for detecting palpable breast cancer, but is less effective in detecting metastatic disease in axillary lymph nodes, according to researchers from Japan. The researchers evaluated whole-body FDG-PET in 80 women who had palpable breast tumors or positive uptake in whole-body PET scans, and presented their study results at the 2008 American Association for Cancer Research (AACR) meeting in San Diego.

Telemammography project achieves success

After 37 months of trials and tribulations, New York-Presbyterian Hospital and Columbia University Medical Center in New York City have successfully established and validated the remote, real-time interpretation of digital mammographic images. Breast MRI with USPIO contrast helps assess lymph node metastases

Austrian researchers have found that breast MRI with a contrast medium based on ultrasmall superparamagnetic iron oxide (USPIO) particles could help avoid mastectomy for women whose breast cancer has not spread to the lymph nodes. But further development of the technique could be limited by the investigational nature of the contrast agent.
