Sonus Microsystems, Medtronic to work on wearable preeclampsia tool

Sonus Microsystems and Medtronic are collaborating to evaluate an integrated non-invasive monitoring system that combines the Sonus Patch AI-powered wearable ultrasound platform with Medtronic's Acute Care and Monitoring technology in field studies in Kenya.

The collaboration, funded by the Gates Foundation under its Grand Challenges program, will focus on screening and triaging pregnant women for early detection of preeclampsia, a serious pregnancy complication affecting approximately 8% of pregnancies globally. The study will be coordinated with Kenyatta University and antenatal facilities in Nairobi, the firms said.

The Sonus Patch platform is designed to automatically locate relevant anatomy and acquire clinical-grade cardiac images without expert positioning, enabling non-specialist clinicians to capture data that has traditionally required specialized sonographers, the companies said.
