Testing the test: lung cancer staging with CT, PET, TBNA, and mediastinoscopy
By
Eric Barnes
Comparing four lung cancer staging methods in a 45-minute talk might seem overambitious, but Dr. Atul Mehta was prepared. The noted pulmonologist reviewed nearly 1,500 studies on CT, PET, transbronchial needle aspiration and mediastinoscopy for a presentation at last week's Chest 2000 conference.

By
Eric Barnes

Detecting nodal metastases accurately is essential for evaluating patients with melanoma. A study in the September
Journal of Nuclear Medicine
said FDG-PET was reasonably sensitive and specific for the detection of lymph node metastases, yet it failed to adequately detect microscopic disease, and produced some false-positive results.
