Lung function guides IMRT planning
Non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) is particularly difficult to treat with radiotherapy as healthy lung tissue may not tolerate the radiation dose required to control tumor growth. Lowering the optimum dose leaves the cancer strong enough to spread, but without the downward adjustment, patients face unpleasant side effects. Inclusion of lung function information into treatment plans could offer big benefits for lung cancer patients.

When it comes to breast cancer, whether local treatment improves a woman's long-term survival rates has been a point of debate for decades, according to Dr. Jay Harris, chair of radiation oncology at the Dana-Farber/Brigham and Women's Cancer Center in Boston. Harris made the case that local control does matter at the recent 2007 Breast Cancer Symposium in San Francisco.
