It's 300 gauss: Do you know where your vent is?
As MRI magnets get stronger and active shielding compresses magnetic fields further, the distance between a gentle tug and a life-and-death tug-of-war is reduced to mere inches. MR staff and patients are often lulled into a false sense of security, thinking that objects are safe in the magnet room because they feel no immediate attraction. But just a step or two closer into the magnetic field and ferromagnetic objects can become lethal missiles. Tobias Gilk from Jünk Architects discusses how the physical design of the MRI suite should be directly aligned with the care provided.

High signal on T2 MR warns of poor healing after Achilles tendon repair
By
Shalmali Pal
MRI can spot potential complications in Achilles tendon repair and is especially adept at pinpointing cysts or necrosis, according to researchers from Germany. In a study of 68 patients with partial or full-thickness tears of the Achilles tendon, they found that MRI was well-suited to monitor the healing and repair process, and that T2-weighted imaging could serve as an early indicator of outcome.

International imaging protocols for scaphoid trauma are all over the map
By
Shalmali Pal
Wrist injuries are quite commonplace, but there doesn't seem to be a common imaging protocol in place for assessing scaphoid fractures, according to an international survey conducted by U.K. researchers. And, despite the need for diagnostic urgency, the timing of wrist imaging exams is not set in stone.

High-field MRI of the brain safely acquired in pacemaker patients
By
Eric Barnes
With the increasing number of implanted pacemakers, too many patients who need an MRI can't be scanned with the modality. Or can they? Researchers from the University of Bonn in Germany put scores of pacemakers to the test on a 3-tesla scanner, and found no significant heating or degradation of function.

Medical gases in the MRI suite
By
Tobias Gilk
Historically, the average patient for most MRI facilities walks in, spends 20 to 40 minutes in the scanner, and walks out. But the clinical benefits of MRI have grown well beyond the healthy and ambulatory, and more patients are requiring medical gas services, ranging from supplemental oxygen to full ventilation. Imaging providers would do well to consider their current and future needs for including these services in their MRI suites, according to MRI architectural consultant Tobias Gilk.
