Rise in procedure volume drives molecular imaging's growth

Molecular imaging continues its rapid rise, spurred on by strong growth in procedure volume. Approximately 1 million PET procedures were performed in the U.S. in 2004 -- a 46% increase compared with the previous year. The increase in nuclear medicine utilization, particularly for cardiac imaging, has not escaped the notice of the U.S. Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS).

In ongoing clinical trials of dendritic cell vaccines, only a limited proportion of patients have responded successfully. This may be because of inadequate delivery, as dendritic cells must migrate throughout the vascular and lymphatic systems to be effective. Dutch and U.S. researchers have suggested that MRI can be very useful for tracking these cells.
