Stanford researchers on path to novel molecular imaging technique

Researchers at Stanford University School of Medicine in Stanford, CA, are developing a new molecular imaging system and technique designed to illuminate tumors and acquire data on numerous tumor-related functions simultaneously. The group is exploring Raman spectroscopy, and if proved safe and beneficial, the technique could provide information unavailable with current molecular imaging modalities.

FDG-PET is effective for diagnosing spinal tumors

F-18 FDG-PET can effectively distinguish benign spinal lesions from malignant ones, according to researchers from North Carolina. They imaged 53 patients with sarcomas and biopsy-proven spinal or paraspinal tumors using FDG-PET, and found that the modality proved to be precise for identifying malignant lesions.
