VIENNA - The use of dual-modality PET/CT for tumor, lymph node metastasis, and distant metastasis staging is more accurate than CT, PET, or side-by-side PET and CT, according to research presented at the European Congress of Radiology (ECR) on Monday. In addition, the use of PET/CT for oncological staging had a significant impact on patient therapy management when compared with the other modalities.

MDCT staging may obviate bone scintigraphy in some patients

VIENNA - Cancer patients undergoing full CT staging may not always need a bone scintigraphy exam, thanks to the diagnostic accuracy of multidetector-row CT scanners. A study presented today at the tumor imaging sessions of the 2005 European Congress of Radiology found 16-slice CT to be statistically equivalent to scintigraphy for detecting skeletal metastases.

Lemon candy may suck for curbing dry mouth after thyroid cancer therapy

Mother always warned you that eating candy before dinner would spoil your appetite. She may not have known that eating candy during radioiodine therapy for thyroid cancer can be just as bad. In a preliminary study, Japanese researchers have found that sucking on lemon candy too close to radiotherapy may actually worsen damage to the salivary glands.
