The Journal of Nuclear Medicine (JNM) recently issued a supplement that provides an up-to-date overview on molecular imaging in neurodegeneration, as well as a discussion on the future of the field.

The journal said it issued the supplement in response to the "ongoing paradigm shift" in how neurodegenerative diseases are defined and diagnosed.

Neurodegenerative disorders encompass most dementias, movement disorders, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, and other diseases, and no preventive or curative treatment is currently available. The journal said these disorders are of socioeconomic relevance in aging societies because incidence grows with age.

The supplement includes several studies and discussion pieces regarding the role of PET imaging in neurodegenerative disorders, such as imaging and detecting inflammation, synapse density, and neurotransmission.
