New studies examine CR, CT radiation dose
By
Rob Skelding
VIENNA - Two studies presented Sunday at the 2008 European Congress of Radiology (ECR) focused on radiation dose with imaging exams. The first spotlighted the importance of x-ray dose optimization for computed radiography (CR) systems, while the other offered a counterargument to recent studies criticizing the risks of radiation exposure in exams like CT angiography.

Mobile DR helps cut ED image transmission times
By
Brian Casey
VIENNA - Using a mobile digital radiography (DR) system in the emergency department (ED) ward helped a radiology department at a French hospital cut the amount of time to image ED patients in half, according to a presentation on Sunday at the 2008 European Congress of Radiology. But the department's efforts to make the efficiency gains permanent have been stymied by government regulations on radiation exposure in healthcare facilities.

Dose studies delve into coronary CTA
By
Eric Barnes
VIENNA - At the 2008 European Congress of Radiology (ECR) on Saturday, researchers presented a pair of studies that examined the radiation dose of coronary CT angiography (CTA). The first compared the dose of 64-slice CT to that of dual-source CT, and the other examined coronary CTA dose data from a multicenter trial.

CAD provides mixed benefits for DR lung exams
By
Brian Casey
VIENNA - A pair of presentations on Saturday at the 2008 European Congress of Radiology on computer-aided detection (CAD) for digital radiography (DR) reported mixed benefits for the software in detecting lung nodules in thoracic exams. The presenters discussed their experiences with a commercially available CAD product and its impact on radiologist performance in analyzing DR lung studies.

Automated patient-based contrast application cuts CTA contrast volume, risk
By
Eric Barnes
VIENNA - A work-in-progress application that bases coronary CT angiography (CTA) contrast dose and timing on a patient's individual cardiac output significantly reduces contrast media use and, by extension, the risk of nephropathy, according to a study presented Friday at the 2008 European Congress of Radiology (ECR).

Dual-source CT edges into cardiac SPECT turf
By
Eric Barnes
U.S. researchers will use this week's European Congress of Radiology in Vienna to present research that shows dual-source CT making inroads into cardiac functional imaging, an area currently dominated by SPECT. The study moves dual-source coronary CT angiography closer to the holy grail of cardiac imaging -- a test that performs both morphological and functional analysis in a single scan.

Coronary CTA cuts costs for chest pain care
By
Eric Barnes
For patients with chest pain and a low risk of coronary artery disease (CAD), diagnosis of CAD based on coronary CT angiography (CTA) was more cost-effective than standard care, according to a new study from Argentina. The researchers examined the cost-effectiveness of a primary strategy of coronary CTA for evaluating CAD in low-risk patients with acute chest pain, compared to standard management for diagnosis.
