First 320-slice coronary CTA study shows high image quality

Image quality was excellent and radiation doses generally low in the first peer-reviewed study of coronary CT angiography (CTA) performed on a 320-slice scanner, which can image the heart in a single beat for most patients, according to researchers from Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston. They retrospectively studied 40 patients who underwent coronary CTA on a 320-detector-row scanner.

CHICAGO - Substantial variation in patient radiation dose can occur during cardiac CT angiography (CTA) studies at different sites around the world, researchers said this week at the 2008 American College of Cardiology (ACC) meeting. The researchers added that the vast majority of CT sites are not using recently released techniques to reduce radiation dose.

Two studies presented on Monday at the 2008 American College of Cardiology (ACC) meeting in Chicago are emblematic of a new wave of evidence supporting the first-line use of CT in subjects with and without suspected heart disease. The first study examined the use of cardiac CT as a gateway to cardiac catheterization in asymptomatic patients, while the second studied the integration of coronary CT angiography into an office-based cardiology practice.
