Dear AuntMinnie Member,
SAN FRANCISCO - Radiology professionals agree that 3D is a great tool, but what if you could make it even better? At this week's International Society for Computed Tomography (ISCT) meeting, attendees heard about 3D with cinematic rendering, which creates photorealistic images described as being like "3D on steroids."
That description came from Dr. Elliot Fishman of Johns Hopkins University, who has been working with 3D cinematic rendering reconstruction for about the past year. He's created approximately 1,000 reconstructions using data from conventional CT scans.
Dr. Fishman explained the benefits and challenges of cinematic rendering to attendees at ISCT 2017, taking the position that the technology could ultimately bring 3D to the next level. Learn more by clicking here.
A host of fascinating studies have been presented at this week's ISCT show, including this article by International Editor Eric Barnes on the best way to judge the value of a CT scan -- an important consideration in this era of value-based imaging. Turns out that value is largely in the eye of the beholder. Finally, be sure to check out this story on the development of ultrahigh-resolution CT.

Vendors and cybersecurity
Last month's WannaCry ransomware attacks have cast a spotlight on the security vulnerabilities present in the computer networks of many healthcare institutions. How prepared is your facility to fend off a cyberattack?
Many facilities rely on their vendors to keep them safe, but a presentation at last week's Society for Imaging Informatics in Medicine (SIIM) meeting showed that many vendors are reluctant to cooperate with customers who want to include more rigorous language addressing security in their contracts. Read more in our story by Senior Editor Erik L. Ridley, who was on hand in Pittsburgh for the show.
