A radiologist in India has been arrested as an alleged key operator in an emerging Al-Qaeda-inspired terrorist group, according to an article by The Times of India.
Indian intelligence officers arrested Ishtiyaq Ahmed on August 22 along with 14 other suspects in a number of raids for their alleged roles in a group known as the “Al-Qaeda in Indian Subcontinent,” according to the article. The group reportedly operated a training camp in a forested area in northwestern India and were “set to launch terror attacks,” the article said.
“The module was aspiring to declare Khilafat and execute serious terrorist activities within the country,” according to a statement in the article from Delhi police.
In other news reports, the Organizer Weekly reported that Ishtiyaq was an alumnus of the Rajendra Institute of Medical Sciences, a state-owned medical college in Ranchi in the state of Jharkhand. He owned a clinic in nearby Hazaribagh where he reportedly groomed individuals to join the group, according to the report.
New Delhi’s Satyaagrah said that Ishtiyaq had been in practice in the area for six years, and included videos with local authorities about the arrests in its report.
