X-ray products distributor Mikron Digital Imaging of Livonia, MI, has loaned a digital x-ray machine to the Field Museum in Chicago to use in scanning historical artifacts.
The museum has been using the detector to conduct nondestructive exploration of artifacts in its collection. Researchers selected more than 45 artifacts materials to be digitally imaged with the new unit, including mummies, both human and nonhuman, lithics, and ceramics. Among the findings was that a cat mummy purchased in 1925 by the museum was simply a bundle of cotton and twigs.
The unit uses a CXDI-50G detector manufactured by Canon Medical Systems of Irvine, CA. The detector is part of a $250,000 package that included a high-resolution imaging display workstation built by Mikron and a RadPro 4-kW portable x-ray machine donated by Virtual Imaging of Delray Beach, FL.
Mikron is a distributor of digital imaging products from Canon and Shimadzu Medical Systems North America of Torrance, CA. The company covers the Michigan and northern Illinois regions.
