The Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality's (AHRQ) national voluntary system for reporting medical errors should be operational by the middle of next year.
William Munier, acting director of AHRQ's Center for Quality Improvement and Patient Safety, said the agency already has solicited companies to remove identification information from patient and physician data. AHRQ also has contracted with another organization to study information doctors and other healthcare providers and entities will report.
In addition, AHRQ will develop regulations to govern the operations of patient safety organizations. Proposed rules will be reviewed by several federal agencies, including the U.S. Food and Drug Administration and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
