Orthopedic specialists eye MRI, DR

Orthopedic specialists are seeking in-office MRI and digital radiography (DR) capabilities to achieve faster and more accurate image interpretation for many specialized orthopedic indications, according to a study released by market research and consulting firm IMV Medical Information Division.

In other results from the IMV survey, U.S. orthopedist specialists refer out only about 17% of their total radiography orders. While only about 12% of the surveyed orthopedists presently own DR equipment, almost one-third expect their practices to purchase or lease DR equipment within the next three years, according to the Des Plaines, IL-based firm.

Surveyed orthopedists ordered roughly twice as many MRI procedures of extremities as whole-body MRI procedures, IMV said. In addition, almost one-fifth of the sample said that their practices intend to acquire extremity MRI equipment within the next three years.
