MedQuist receives final judgment on lawsuit

Speech recognition and transcription technology provider MedQuist of Mount Laurel, NJ, has received a final judgment on a class-action suit, the company reported.

MedQuist received final judgment from U.S. District Court for the District of New Jersey approving settlement and dismissing the consolidated medical transcriptionist class action that was launched against the company following its disclosure of the results of an internal review of its historic billing practices in July 2004.

As part of the settlement, MedQuist agreed to pay $1.5 million, approximately $1.1 million of which will be given to the Association for Healthcare Documentation Integrity (AHDI) to fund programs for the general benefit of medical transcriptionists and the medical transcription industry. The balance of the settlement funds will be paid to cover settlement administration costs and the plaintiffs' counsel's out-of-pocket expenses.
