Week in review: SNMMI 2023 coverage | AI and chest x-rays | Cognitive decline

Dear AuntMinnie Member,

Coverage of the annual meeting of the Society of Nuclear Medicine and Molecular Imaging (SNMMI) dominated this week's top 10 list of most-viewed articles, led by the always highly anticipated announcement of the society's Image of the Year.

Advances in theranostics took center stage at SNMMI 2023, so it was fitting that the 2023 Image of the Year was awarded for images from the first in-human evaluation of a theranostics pair for detecting and treating pancreatic cancer. Our article on the group's research was also very popular.

Other SNMMI 2023 articles generating high levels of interest among our members included a report on a new PET tracer that can detect and differentiate clear cell renal cancer and a story on a new therapeutic target for bladder cancer.

AI and chest x-rays

Can radiologists trust AI? Not surprisingly, it may depend on how well the software performs.

A recent reader study has found that the participating radiologists improved their performance for detecting lung cancer on chest radiographs when the AI software they used was highly accurate. The readers were also more willing to change their initial interpretation compared with when they were using software with lower diagnostic accuracy.

Cognitive decline

Although social isolation had previously been tied to a higher risk of cognitive decline, the neurobiological reasons for this association are not well understood. Brain MRI has shown, however, that patients with self-reported social isolation have a smaller hippocampus volume and reduced cortical thickness, according to a recent study from Germany.

And the higher the level of social isolation, the poorer their cognitive functions. What else did the researchers find? Click here to find out or check out our MRI Community
