ASTRO recognizes fellows class for 2022

The American Society for Radiation Oncology (ASTRO) recently named 27 distinguished members for the ASTRO Fellow (FASTRO) designation.

The 2022 class of fellows will be recognized October 25 at an awards ceremony during the society's 64th annual meeting, October 23-26 in San Antonio, TX.

The ASTRO Fellows program recognizes individuals who have made substantial contributions to the society and to the field of radiation oncology through research, education, patient care, and service to the field. The FASTRO designation has been awarded to 421 of ASTRO's 10,000 members worldwide since the program's inception in 2006.

PET/CT scans ‘crucial’ in patients with NK/T-cell lymphoma

PET/CT has significant advantages over conventional methods for lesion detection and staging in patients with natural killer/T-cell lymphoma.

A 50-year-old man with recently diagnosed nasal-type NK/T-cell lymphoma underwent an F-18 FDG-PET/CT scan (A–D) for initial staging. Maximum-intensity-projection image (A) shows hypermetabolic lesions in both ethmoid sinus (thin arrow), both cervical lymphatic chains (arrowhead), left upper lung (thick arrow), liver, and spleen. Transaxial images show an F-18 FDG-avid mass in both ethmoid sinus (B). The scan shows intense F-18 FDG radiotracer uptake in left upper lung and uptake in the liver and spleen (CT showed no lesions), suggesting malignancy (C–D). Finally, after the PET/CT scan was done, the patient’s staging was changed from II to IV.

FES-PET better than FDG-PET in breast cancer patients

In a head-to-head comparison, F-18 fluoroestradiol (FES)-PET/CT was better than standard FDG-PET/CT for the initial staging of estrogen receptor-positive breast cancer patients.
