The Society of Breast Imaging (SBI) on March 17 released guidance to its members on best practices that breast imaging centers can implement for social distancing during the coronavirus outbreak.

Noting that the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has stated that it is wise for healthcare facilities in communities experiencing coronavirus spread to "cancel elective and nonurgent procedures," the society is recommending that facilities consider delaying screening breast exams for several weeks or months.

"Many of our members have voiced concern that providing routine care for asymptomatic women who may be unknowing carriers of COVID-19 places others at risk," the society said.

The SBI recommended that facilities reschedule and complete all delayed screening as soon as the pandemic has subsided, SBI said.
