Shine validates isotope production process

Medical isotope firm Shine Medical Technologies took another step toward medical isotope production with the recently completed validation of its low-enriched uranium process.

Shine will use low-enriched uranium in a high-flux neutron generator from nuclear technology company Phoenix (formerly known as Phoenix Nuclear Labs).

The two companies tested the first production-ready particle accelerator system at Shine's Janesville, WI, facility over 132 consecutive hours (5.5 days) to determine the percentage of uptime and total neutron output. The average system neutron yield was measured at 110% of the required output, with greater than 99% uptime. A third-party observer verified the results.

Last month, Shine broke ground on its North American production facility in Janesville. At full capacity, the facility will use a total of eight Phoenix neutron generators to produce molybdenum-99 (Mo-99).
