Total-body PET/CT scanner offers 1st images

Researchers at the University of California, Davis (UCD) have unveiled the first images from the Explorer total-body PET/CT scanner.

UCD partnered with United Imaging Healthcare (UIH) of Shanghai to build the system, which produces 3D images of the entire human body in one scan. Because Explorer captures radiation more efficiently than other scanners, it can create an image in as little as one second, according to UCD. In addition, the PET/CT scanner can visualize specially tagged drugs as they move through the body over time.

UCD and UIH developers expect the technology will help in monitoring disease progression and developing new drug therapies, among other uses.

Images from Explorer will be shown by UIH at next week's RSNA 2018 meeting in Chicago.
