TeamBest to acquire Tenn. cyclotron firm

Radiation oncology firm TeamBest has announced an agreement to acquire ABT Molecular Imaging (ABT), a Knoxville, TN-based cyclotron manufacturing company.

ABT Molecular Imaging will bring new cyclotron expertise to TeamBest, particularly in making smaller cyclotrons and in automated chemistry. ABT's BG-75 Biomarker Generator is smaller and easier to install and operate than most conventional systems. TeamBest has formed a new company, Best ABT, to make the acquisition

Another TeamBest firm, Best Cyclotron Systems (BCS), already offers a wide array of cyclotrons ranging from 15 MeV to 70 MeV. A fully functioning Best 70-MeV cyclotron has been successfully installed in Legnaro, Italy. BCS is currently installing several other cyclotrons in various countries worldwide.

PET/CT scans ‘crucial’ in patients with NK/T-cell lymphoma

PET/CT has significant advantages over conventional methods for lesion detection and staging in patients with natural killer/T-cell lymphoma.

A 50-year-old man with recently diagnosed nasal-type NK/T-cell lymphoma underwent an F-18 FDG-PET/CT scan (A–D) for initial staging. Maximum-intensity-projection image (A) shows hypermetabolic lesions in both ethmoid sinus (thin arrow), both cervical lymphatic chains (arrowhead), left upper lung (thick arrow), liver, and spleen. Transaxial images show an F-18 FDG-avid mass in both ethmoid sinus (B). The scan shows intense F-18 FDG radiotracer uptake in left upper lung and uptake in the liver and spleen (CT showed no lesions), suggesting malignancy (C–D). Finally, after the PET/CT scan was done, the patient’s staging was changed from II to IV.

FES-PET better than FDG-PET in breast cancer patients

In a head-to-head comparison, F-18 fluoroestradiol (FES)-PET/CT was better than standard FDG-PET/CT for the initial staging of estrogen receptor-positive breast cancer patients.
