Facebook may be a useful tool for communicating with women about screening mammography, according to a study published online October 29 in Public Health Nursing.

Heidi Klippert and colleague Ana Schaper, PhD, both of Idaho State University in Pocatello, conducted a Facebook mammography screening awareness campaign during Breast Cancer Awareness month in 2017. The campaign targeted rural Idaho women older than 40.

The Facebook post included a link to a survey that measured the intent of women to get mammograms. It reached 48,503 Facebook users, 11,147 of whom were unique. Of the total users, 49 completed the survey; 82% of these said they would get a mammogram in the next year.

"This project ... demonstrates how public health nurses can develop, implement, and evaluate Facebook mammography campaigns in the future," Klippert and Schaper concluded.
