BWXT selects Mo-99 irradiation provider

BWX Technologies (BWXT) has chosen Canadian Nuclear Partners (CNP), a wholly-owned subsidiary of Ontario Power Generation, to provide irradiation services to support its new medical isotope manufacturing technology for molybdenum-99 (Mo-99).

BWXT has developed a process to produce Mo-99 to stabilize the North American supply of the medical isotope. Mo-99 will then be used in BWXT's newly designed technetium-99m (Tc-99m) generators, which are in commercial development.

The generators are designed to integrate with the current radiopharmacy supply chain and provide the same concentration of Tc-99m that is available from generators using fission-based Mo-99 made from uranium targets.

BWXT is a U.S. government nuclear components supplier based in Lynchburg, VA. In April, the company signed an agreement to purchase Sotera Health's Nordion medical isotope business.
