Carestream Health plans to show a digital tomosynthesis capability option for its DRX-Evolution Plus digital radiography (DR) system at the RSNA 2019 conference.

Carestream's version of tomosynthesis, which is still pending 510(k) clearance from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), uses a single sweep of the x-ray tube head to acquire multiple images, rather than a single 2D image. The tomosynthesis images can then be reconstructed into 3D volumes.

Carestream believes that digital tomosynthesis can enhance operator workflow by separating the process of digital tomosynthesis exposure acquisition from image volume formation.

The technology is designed to reduce scan time and eliminate the trial-and-error process in locating the anatomical region of interest on x-rays.
