Mammo services halted at NC facility

Mammography services have been suspended at Raleigh Radiology Blue Ridge after a review of its services by the American College of Radiology (ACR) and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

A statement from officials at the North Carolina facility said they expect the suspension is temporary, adding that the ACR assessment covered a "small number of mammography cases and only as to the technical quality of the mammography images generated. The majority of the cases reviewed were acceptable to the ACR and neither the ACR nor the FDA has indicated that any visible cancer or disease on any image was overlooked."

Before services can resume, however, Blue Ridge must implement a corrective action plan and have its mammography accreditation reinstated. All other Raleigh Radiology facilities are still operating and are not affected by the temporary mammography suspension. Blue Ridge's other imaging services remain available.

"We are working with the ACR and the FDA to understand their concerns and have begun to implement the corrective action plan," the statement continued. "We are also working to notify patients who received mammograms at the Blue Ridge facility between November 7, 2017, and November 6, 2019, with more information."

Those patients will receive a letter from Raleigh Radiology and a letter from the FDA regarding the situation.
