ACR taps Dr. Beverly Coleman as new president

In a landmark moment, the American College of Radiology (ACR) has elected Dr. Beverly Coleman as its new president. She will be the first African American to lead the organization in its nearly 100-year history.

A radiology and ultrasound expert, Coleman is the first director of fetal imaging at the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia Center for Fetal Diagnosis and Treatment and the inaugural holder of the Beverly Gilbert Coleman Endowed Chair in Fetal Imaging, according to the ACR. In addition, Coleman served on the ACR Board of Chancellors from 2014 to 2020 as the chair of the ACR Commission on Ultrasound. She was also previously the ACR liaison to the American Institute of Ultrasound in Medicine (AIUM) Board of Governors.

In other ACR news, the organization announced that Dr. James Rawson of Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston has been elected as vice president. Rawson most recently served as secretary-treasurer of the ACR Board of Chancellors and was previously chair of the ACR Commission on Patient and Family Centered Care.

The ACR also elected Dr. Amy Kotsenas of the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN, as council speaker for a two-year term. Kotsenas previously served as ACR Council vice speaker and is the ACR Council Steering Committee liaison to the ACR Data Science Institute.

In addition, Dr. Dana Smetherman of the Ochsner Clinic in New Orleans has been elected as secretary-treasurer for a two-year term. Smetherman has been president of the Radiological Society of Louisiana, a board member for the National Accrediting Program of Breast Centers, an advisor to the American Medical Association Current Procedural Terminology (CPT) Panel, and a director on the Ochsner Health Board, according to the ACR.

The ACR also elected Dr. Timothy Crummy of SSM Health St. Mary's Hospital in Madison, WI, to a two-year term as ACR Council vice speaker. He has previously been a member of the ACR Council Steering Committee.

All new officers will assume their roles at the end of the virtual ACR 2021 annual meeting on May 18, the ACR said.
