Royal Philips, parent company of Philips Healthcare, has teamed with PURE (Point-of-care Ultrasound in Resource-limited Environments) to develop a teleultrasound mentorship program in Rwanda.

The program allows physicians in Europe and the U.S. to support emergency medicine training in Rwanda, particularly emergency medicine residents at the University Teaching Hospital of Kigali. It uses Philips' Lumify with Reacts portable teleultrasound system, which works with compatible smartphones or tablets and allows for two-way audiovisual calls with live ultrasound streaming.

PURE has been providing ultrasound training to healthcare workers in Rwanda since 2011. Doctors trained through the program become mentors who can train primary care and emergency medical workers throughout the rest of the country, Philips said.
