Information technology giant Oracle has signed an agreement to purchase healthcare IT firm Cerner for $28.3 billion.

The acquisition will allow Oracle to offer its clients next-generation medical information access and support, it said. The company plans to incorporate Cerner's medical record systems into its Autonomous Database and its Gen2 Cloud, hands-free Voice Digital Assistant platform. Integrating Oracle's and Cerner's offerings will streamline physician workflow, according to the two firms.

Cerner will be a dedicated business unit within Oracle. The deal is expected to close in 2022, subject to regulatory approvals, the companies said.
