Hyperfine Research has announced an installation of its Swoop portable MRI scanner at the Tampa General Hospital, a comprehensive stroke center in Florida, for use in assessing critically ill patients with imaging at the point of care.

The scanner was designed for use in intensive care units and other areas of hospitals where metal objects are common, according to the company. It was cleared by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in August and has demonstrated efficacy for assessment of brain injury in a study of 50 patients that was recently published in the JAMA Neurology, Hyperfine noted.

Swoop could play a role in the emergency room with the goal of decreasing wait times and for scanning COVID-19 patients at the bedside, Hyperfine said.
