The U.S. National Institutes of Health (NIH) has announced new funding opportunities for its $4.5 billion Brain Research Through Advancing Neurotechnologies (BRAIN) initiative.

The BRAIN initiative is managed by 10 NIH institutes and aims to accelerate neuroscience research by equipping researchers with the necessary tools for understanding the brain. The NIH is specifically seeking applicants with ideas for novel noninvasive imaging methods or bold, new uses of existing imaging technologies.

Projects should be small scale and in early-stage development. They should also provide proof-of-concept for innovative, original, or unconventional imaging concepts that advance understanding of brain functionality and connectivity.

The NIH and its partners plan to provide about $4 million to fund six to 12 awards. Projects should last no more than two years, with a maximum budget of $300,000 for direct costs per year.

The NIH will open submissions on August 30 of this year. Applications for 2020 will be due on September 3 at 5 p.m. local time. Interested applicants must also submit a letter of intent 30 days before submitting an application.
