Mumbai MRI scanner still offline after fatal accident

The MRI scanner at the Indian hospital where a visitor was sucked into the magnet and died remains offline, according to a March 29 report by DNA.

Brihanmumbai Municipal plans to return the MRI device at Nair Hospital to service at an estimated cost of 80 million rupees ($1.2 million U.S.) via an upgrade process rather than as a repair, as had been originally proposed. The hospital reportedly is in negotiations with a contractor; there is no word on when the upgrade may happen.

A few months ago, 32-year-old Rajesh Maru was drawn into the scanner's MRI bore after being asked to carry a metal oxygen tank into the MRI suite for his mother-in-law, who was a patient at the facility. As a result of the death, radiologist Dr. Siddhant Shah in February became the fourth person arrested in connection with the case. The other three individuals were hospital personnel who were at BYL Nair Hospital in Mumbai when the incident occurred.

The investigative report of the MRI death has yet to be submitted to the Municipal Commissioner, according to DNA.
