VA gives high marks for MRI safety

The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) has found high compliance in its review of MRI safety guidelines at its facilities.

The evaluation was performed from April 2014 to March 2015 using 49 combined assessment program reviews.

The VA awarded high marks for areas such as patients or caregivers signing the second MRI patient safety screening form and level 2 MRI personnel receiving annual level-specific MRI safety training.

The VA also recommended the following:

  • Employees consistently conduct initial MRI patient safety screenings.
  • Level 2 MRI personnel consistently document when they review the second MRI patient safety screening forms.
  • Level 2 MRI personnel document resolution of all identified potential contraindications prior to the MRI exam.
  • Facilities routinely conduct contrast reaction drills in MRI areas.
  • All designated level 1 ancillary employees receive annual level-specific MRI safety training.
