Medical Metrics signs on for FDA hip implant study

Imaging core lab services provider Medical Metrics (MMI) said it has been selected by five orthopedic device manufacturers to support multiple cross-sectional postmarket surveillance studies of metal-on-metal hip implants.

MMI said it will independently evaluate radiographs and MRI exams to assess long-term outcomes in patients implanted with metal-on-metal hips. More than 2,000 research subjects will be evaluated at one to 10 years postimplantation, according to the firm.

These studies aim to comply with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration's (FDA) 522 order, which requires metal-on-metal hip implant manufacturers to conduct clinical surveillance of the effect of device wear in implanted patients, the company said.
